I have the had the honour of serving as the Member of Parliament for my local community of St Helens South and Whiston.

St Helens has been my home all my life. I love this town. My constituency includes the historic towns of Prescot and Whiston that I have come to care for just as much.

Since 2015, when I first became the MP, I have experienced three general elections. Each time I was honoured to be selected by my local community to represent them on the national stage.

Before entering Parliament, I worked at Pilkington and served as a local councillor for over 30 years, including twice being the leader of the St Helens Council. Back in 2005 I was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for my service to local government. This was a great honour that I will never forget.

MY STORY

1947

Born in Victoria St, St Helens

In 1947 I was born in Victoria Street, St Helens at a home birth as was common in those days

1962

Health & Safety Advisor

In 1962, I started to work at Pilkingtons, beginning as a messenger before rising to a Health & Safety Advisor

1978

First Elected to St Helens Council

In 1978, I was first elected as a councillor on St Helens Borough Council

1985

Leader of the council

In 1985, I was elected as leader of the council

1994

Securing land for Willowbrook

In 1994, I secured land for Willowbrook Hospice which has helped thousands in the community

2005

2008 - 2010

Two new hospitals for St Helens

I secured two new hospitals to cover the local community, St Helens and Whiston which are classed as outstanding

2011

New Saints Grounds

In 2011, the new Saints ground opened on the excellent site that I secured

Since 2015 when I first became the MP, I have experienced three general elections. Each time I was honoured to be selected by my local community to represent them on the national stage.

Shadow Disabilities Minister

In 2017, I became the shadow disabilities minister to support issues that impact on people living with disabilities
