I have the honour of serving as the Member of Parliament for my local community of St Helens South and Whiston.
St Helens has been my home all my life. I love this town. My constituency includes the historic towns of Prescot and Whiston that I have come to care for just as much.
Since 2015, when I first became the MP, I have experienced three general elections. Each time I was honoured to be selected by my local community to represent them on the national stage.
Before entering Parliament, I worked at Pilkington and served as a local councillor for over 30 years, including twice being the leader of the St Helens Council. Back in 2005 I was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for my service to local government. This was a great honour that I will never forget
1947
In 1947 I was born in Victoria Street, St Helens at a home birth as was common in those days
1962
In 1962, I started to work at Pilkingtons, beginning as a messenger before rising to a Health & Safety Advisor
1978
In 1978, I was first elected as a councillor on St Helens Borough Council
1985
In 1985, I was elected as leader of the council
1994
In 1994, I secured land for Willowbrook Hospice which has helped thousands in the community.
2005
Before entering parliament, I served as a local councillor for over 30 years, including twice being the leader of the St Helens Council
2010
I secured two new hospitals to cover the local community, St Helens and Whiston which are classed as outstanding.
2011
In 2011, the new Saints ground opened on the excellent site that i secured.
2015
Since 2015 when I first became the MP, I have experienced three general elections. Each time I was honoured to be selected by my local community to represent them and the national stage
2017
In 2017, I became the shadow disabilities minister to support issues that impact on people living with disabilities.
2020
When i first started in Parliament I was proud to serve as a member of the Justice Select Committee, Which I did up until May 2020
2021
In 2021, I initiated change in the law that gives the government the power to tackle the importing of forcibly harvested organs.
