“I welcome the Government’s decision to bring the Hillsborough Law before Parliament today.
This is a long-awaited moment, and I am deeply grateful that what campaigners and families have fought for, for decades, is finally becoming law.
I have been proud to back the push for this in recent months alongside colleagues. This law is a large and necessary step towards delivering justice for the victims and the families. It will help ensure truth, transparency and accountability where too often those things were denied. I would like to echo Mayor Steve Rotheram‘s words that this can be a lasting legacy to the 97.
But we must be clear now as we were before, this legislation must be protected as it passes through Parliament so it can do the job intended, we will not accept a watered-down version.
Finally, thank you to all those who have campaigned so tirelessly, especially the families whose courage has driven this entire campaign, to Mayor Andy Burnham for starting this campaign, and finally to Ian Byrne MP for his leadership in recent months. Their determination has brought us to this landmark moment.”
